Squirrel

Male TabbySquirrel is an adorable kitten.  He showed up as a stray but the family gave him a lot of care and socialization.  They had too many cats and couldn’t keep him.  He has a very calm, affectionate, sweet disposition.  He does well with other cats and likes kids too.  He is litter box trained, neutered and current on shots.  Squirrel was only outside before he came to us, but loves to be indoors now.

London

London came to us with her brother, Luke.  They were an owner surrender, had too many dogs.  She has been outside most of her life but is using the doggy door and doing well inside.  She is very playful, full of energy and loves human attention.  She does ok with other dogs and kids but no cats.  She loves toys and to play ball. London also loves belly rubs. She had never worn a collar or a leash when we got her, but is learning very quickly – she is a smart little Cookie. Most outside dogs are easily house trained too. London would make a great pup for a family that will shower her with affection. She is 7 months old and weighs 40lbs (as of 2/26/24).

Luke

Shepherd Mix Puppy

Luke came to us with his sister, London.  They were surrendered because their owner had too many dogs.  They said Luke’s mother was Hairy Mouth Heeler and Dad a lab/pit mix, but he looks like a Black Mouth Cur/Shepherd Mix to us.  He is a very active and playful dog and needs a place to run and play with people who will give him lots of attention.  He does not like cats and is learning how to act around other dogs, but he is good with kids.  I believe he will learn to like other dogs with training because he seems like he wants to be nice, he is just afraid they will hurt him and doesn’t know how to not be on guard.

Luke has been outside most of his life and will also need work on house training but seems very smart and receptive to learning. He is eager to please and just wants a person to love on him and be with him all the time.  He will make a great companion dog for someone or a family.

He is under a year old and weighs 45lbs, but still has some growing to do.

Critter

Critter is a fun, sweet and energetic boy with the most gorgeous brown eyes. He was picked up as a stray and brought to us for chasing pigs and killing chickens- farm life is just not for him! He likes cats and other dogs but is really strong, so young kids would not be a good fit. Critter is very active and craves human attention.  He has such good energy and we joke that he tap dances because his little paws are constantly going up and down with excitement. He is housetrained and leash trained.  He tested positive for Heart Worms and just finished his treatment – he will need to be on HW preventative the rest of his life. Critter does well on a leash, is already neutered and current on shots. He is about 3-4 years old and weighs 50lbs. Critter is also afraid of thunder and needs a “thunder buddy” to cuddle during storms.

**Critter was enrolled in the Paws in Prison Program for 8 weeks of obedience training. He will be at the North Central Unit in Calico Rock. He will be crate trained, learn manners, and he will learn some tricks as well! Critter will be looking for a forever home before he graduates in late July, so if you are interested in meeting him, please contact us!

Rocco

Rocco is sweet, calm and affectionate. He enjoys exploring and playing with toys, but is pretty laid back. Rocco was dumped in a park with his 5 brothers and was in a home until we could take him at the shelter. He has never been outside, so he is litter box trained. He could be an indoor/outdoor cat, after he gets comfortable with his new home. Rocco is also neutered and current on shots. He is about a year old and is on the bigger side, resembling a the Ocicat Breed with his spotted body and stripped legs.

Britches

Older Male CatBritches showed up as a stray and has only been outdoors before we got him, but he loves it indoors at the shelter and he is litter box trained.  Britches is also neutered and current on shots. He does well with other cats but we are not sure about dogs or kids.  He was very afraid when we first received him, but is warming up and getting used to our attention. He really loves cheek scratches and affection, as long as you move slow around him. Loud noises and fast movements tend to scare him, but I think that is because he is not used to being inside. Britches is about 4 years old.

Kyla

Great Pyrenees

Kyla is a giant love bug! She puts her front paws on everyone and just wants to be held. If you are sitting, she will try and be in your lap and she is constantly rolling on her back for belly rubs. Kyla does not have a mean bone in her body and we have never seen anything negative with this girl (besides arguing with her siblings). She gets along great with other dogs and cats too. Kyla is also gentle and calm.  Her mother was a Great Pyrenees and we don’t know what Dad is. She will be about 65lbs full grown (she is just under a year old now) and 58lbs).  She has wavy and thick, medium length hair.

**Kyla was enrolled in the Paws in Prison Program for 8 weeks of obedience training. She will be at the North Central Unit in Calico Rock. She will be crate trained, learn manners, and she will learn lots of tricks as well! Kyla will be looking for a forever home before she graduates in early August, so if you are interested in meeting her, please contact us!

Dewey

Dewey, Upon Arrival at SCHS

Dewey was found starving and rummaging through trash at a campground in the National Forest. He only weighed 32 pounds.  He was brought to the shelter and we started him on a feeding regiment giving him small amounts numerous times a day. Dewey was heart worm positive and received treatment once he reached a healthy weight.  He also had a severe infection that we treated with antibiotics. Dewey is now a healthy 62 pounds and his blood work shows no signs of infection!

Despite his struggles, Dewey has been a BIG SWEETHEART through everything. He loves affection and just wants to be held and cuddled. He gives us hugs and lays in our laps, even though he is a large dog.  Dewey also enjoys playing with other dogs and going for walks. He is house trained, neutered, up to date on shots and ready to find his new family!
