Ruger

German Shepherd German Shepherd for AdoptionRuger is a beautiful, 11 month old German Shepherd.  He was adopted from a breeder and the family did not have enough time for him. The breeder would not take him back so he was surrendered to our shelter.  He has been both indoors and outdoors and is mostly housetrained (occasional marking because he is not neutered yet).  Ruger is very friendly, loves people and craves attention.  He is also gentle, pretty calm and is good with other dogs (has not been around cats).  He is very smart and does well on a leash too.  The man that brought him here said Ruger liked to ride him with him on his 4-wheeler around the farm. Ruger would make a great family pet or companion for any dog lover.

Dingo

French Bull Dog/Pit MixDingo was surrendered to us because her owner could not afford to care for her and they had a baby on the way.  She grew up in that home, was both inside and outside and is partially housetrained.  Dingo is very good with other dogs and kids.  She has a calm loving nature and also likes to play.  The owners said she has some red nose pit in her but we see a mixture of a lot of breeds.  Her short stature and cute ears resemble a French Bulldog.  She has tan/gold eyes too, a very beautiful girl. Dingo is currently 2 years old and weighs 45lbs.

Rebel

Male Puppy

Rebel is a very independent, sweet puppy.  He came to us with his mother, Lulu and his brother, Rufus.  They all look so different and we have no information regarding Dad.  We think the mother is a Kelpie mix but this little guy looks like he has some lab in him to.  He is a puppy, so not housetrained, but is very good at only going in his outside area.  He loves attention, toys, and all the human contact and love he can get.

Rebel is needing a forever home ASAP because his brother just got adopted and he is too little to be paired with any of the other dogs we have, so he is awfully lonely. He needs a home to run around in, with people who will smother him with attention and love.

Gunner

Boxer Mix

Gunner is one of a kind.  He looks a little intimidating, but is a good boy! He was an owner surrender – he has too much energy for their family. We really don’t know his breed and they didn’t have info on parents- might have some Boxer or Mastiff in him. Gunner is house trained, good with cats and other dogs.  He loves human attention and is very playful- he loves to play fetch and mess around in the water hose. He also loves a good scratch on his hind quarters. Gunner needs a home with a family that has time to play with him and take him on adventures.  The family that surrendered him did say they didn’t have enough time to spend with him. He walks well on a leash and doesn’t pull at all.  Gunner is neutered, fully vaccinated and just needs a loving home! He is currently a year old and weighs 60lbs.

**Gunner was enrolled in the Paws in Prison Program for 8 weeks of obedience training. He will be at the North Central Unit in Calico Rock. He will be crate trained, house trained, learn manners and he may even learn some tricks as well! Gunner will be looking for a forever home before he graduates in late May, so if you are interested in meeting him, please contact us!

London

London came to us with her brother, Luke.  They were an owner surrender, had too many dogs.  She has been outside most of her life but is using the doggy door and doing well inside.  She is very playful, full of energy and loves human attention.  She does ok with other dogs and kids but no cats.  She loves toys and to play ball. London also loves belly rubs. She had never worn a collar or a leash when we got her, but is learning very quickly – she is a smart little Cookie. Most outside dogs are easily house trained too. London would make a great pup for a family that will shower her with affection. She is 7 months old and weighs 40lbs (as of 2/26/24).

Luke

Shepherd Mix Puppy

Luke came to us with his sister, London.  They were surrendered because their owner had too many dogs.  They said Luke’s mother was Hairy Mouth Heeler and Dad a lab/pit mix, but he looks like a Black Mouth Cur/Shepherd Mix to us.  He is a very active and playful dog and needs a place to run and play with people who will give him lots of attention.  He does not like cats and is learning how to act around other dogs, but he is good with kids.  I believe he will learn to like other dogs with training because he seems like he wants to be nice, he is just afraid they will hurt him and doesn’t know how to not be on guard.

Luke has been outside most of his life and will also need work on house training but seems very smart and receptive to learning. He is eager to please and just wants a person to love on him and be with him all the time.  He will make a great companion dog for someone or a family.

He is under a year old and weighs 45lbs, but still has some growing to do.

Critter

Critter is a fun, sweet and energetic boy with the most gorgeous brown eyes. He was picked up as a stray and brought to us for chasing pigs and killing chickens- farm life is just not for him! He likes cats and other dogs but is really strong, so young kids would not be a good fit. Critter is very active and craves human attention.  He has such good energy and we joke that he tap dances because his little paws are constantly going up and down with excitement. He is housetrained and leash trained.  He tested positive for Heart Worms and just finished his treatment – he will need to be on HW preventative the rest of his life. Critter does well on a leash, is already neutered and current on shots. He is about 3-4 years old and weighs 50lbs.

Heidi

Heeler Mix**UPDATE FROM PIP TRAINER: Everyone should know that Heidi’s training is amazing. Her basics are excellent, she has learned so many tricks, and today she demonstrated about 20 learned behaviors with hand signals only. She is able to focus on her handlers waiting to see what it is they want her to do next. She likes to be by their side. It is just great the way she looks like she wants to practice her training and seems to want to learn more. I would love to see her adopted by someone who wants to do something with her like a sport such as agility or nose work or have Heidi become a therapy dog where she can visit nursing homes or do animal assisted therapy in nursing homes or a children’s hospital. She looks like she needs some kind of job but of course she would be happy in any loving home. **

Heidi came to us with her brother Hank, but looks nothing like him. They both have beautiful green eyes, but Heidi has short speckled fur, like a Heeler Mix while Hank has long solid hair.  Mom was a Pyreenes/Heeler mix and we don’t know about Dad. Heidi came to us because she was killing chickens.  She has only been outside, but does not potty in her pen so house-training shouldn’t be hard.  Heidi is very friendly, loves attention, and seems very smart.  She is good with other dogs and kids.  She would make a great family pet! She is currently 7 months old and weighs 45lbs (as of 2/5/24).

*Heidi was enrolled in the Paws in Prison Program for 8 weeks of obedience training. She will be at the North Central Unit in Calico Rock. She will be crate trained, house trained, learn manners and she may even learn some tricks as well! Heidi will be looking for a forever home before she graduates in late April, so if you are interested in meeting her, please contact us!

Dewey

Dewey, Upon Arrival at SCHS

Dewey was found starving and rummaging through trash at a campground in the National Forest. He only weighed 32 pounds.  He was brought to the shelter and we started him on a feeding regiment giving him small amounts numerous times a day. Dewey was heart worm positive and received treatment once he reached a healthy weight.  He also had a severe infection that we treated with antibiotics. Dewey is now a healthy 62 pounds and his blood work shows no signs of infection!

Despite his struggles, Dewey has been a BIG SWEETHEART through everything. He loves affection and just wants to be held and cuddled. He gives us hugs and lays in our laps, even though he is a large dog.  Dewey also enjoys playing with other dogs and going for walks. He is house trained, neutered, up to date on shots and ready to find his new family!
